A honorable mention that I want to give you is buffalo creek & gauley no. 17. I have a lot of information about this engine. (17 was built as savanna and Atlanta 504 by Baldwin in September of 1925. After being retired by the railroad in the 1950s she was sold along with 2 of her sisters to the Elk river coal and lumber railroad renumbered from 15-17 all 3 would also end up under the hands of the buffalo creek & gauley railroad pulling occasional coal and lumber loads. 7 more years of service, 15 was scrapped in June of 1962, 16 was retired in 1959 but was scrapped in 1974 while 17 pressed on. She was sold to the Lavona Avon and lakeville tourist railroad in New York in 1963 were she served on excursion trains. Tragically 3 years later 17 began to develop mechanical issues as it to began to show its age, mainly problems with her firebox. ACORDING TO A RAILROAD.net form email from E.H Blably on May 25, 2004: “in retrospect, this locomotive was an unfortunate purchase. It had seen hard service in West Virginia, moving slack coal from a mine tipple to a gob pile. We doubt it received much attention and in particular, it didn’t receive regular boiler washes. -from E.H. Blably 2004 After 17 was pulled from service they bought another engine former Huntington and broad top mountain no. 38 which had a former Pennsylvania railroad E7 tender. After HBM 38 arrived number 17 was sold to a Rochester businessman who sold it for scrap.
